ACNH Fringe: Celebrating Women of Colour
Hi all!
Today’s artist announcements for ACNH Fringe celebrates the amazing and creative women of colour taking the stage in Melbourne & beyond.
First up are a special double act of stand-up comedians Sam Serna and Sunanda Sachatrakul!
Sam is a Venezuelan migrant who's been in Australia for the last 10 years. She's a frustrated engineer who finally decided to pursue her passion for performing and comedy. She's been a regular at Melbourne open mics since mid 2019, which gave her the opportunity to present her work on 2020's Adelaide Fringe as part of a comedian's showcase.
Sunanda is a queermedian born in New Delhi, corrupted in Bangkok and hustled in New York and Los Angeles. Sunanda has toured performing standup with Magner's International Comedy Festival around Asia and also performed sketch comedy on several house teams at various Los Angeles theaters before she moved to Melbourne last June. Her debut multimedia solo show, "How Gay am I?" ran at Melbourne Fringe 2019 and Midsumma Festival 2020 to sold out audiences.
Sam and Sunanda are also running their show Yes We Tan! over Melbourne Fringe - get your tickets!
We also have Sharmini Kumar! You may remember her from our earlier livestreams where we talked about their own online festival Austen Con, but Sharmini herself will come on to share a very royal story.
Sharmini is the founder and artistic director of 24 Carrot Productions. She has written,
directed and produced a number of theatre pieces including Shakespeare in Therapy, The Margins of ‘Persuasion’ and The Sisters; or, Galileo’s Penance. She has written, directed and produced short films, and written radio documentaries for the ABC. She is particularly interested in finding contemporary resonance in traditional or historical stories.
Austen Con is still available to view online when you sign up for the 24 Carrot Productions Patreon, but here’s a very special excerpt - a monologue from Lizzie Borden and Lizzie Bennet, written by Sharmini, performed by Creatrix Tiara (our ACNH Fringe Island Producer & the person writing all these missives), filmed on location at the ACNH Fringe Fest island!
Stay tuned tomorrow for more and don’t forget to get your tickets now!
